What position has the biggest and smallest gap in quality from National league to Premier league?
Just watching the national league playoff final after the Leeds Newcastle game and started thinking. In what position is the gulf in class biggest and smallest between those divisions. Seems fairly straightforward to say striker is the biggest and probably centre back the smallest, but is it that straightforward?

Goalkeeper has to be pretty high up the list. What other positions?

Re: What position has the biggest and smallest gap in quality from National league to Premier league?
My local team Wealdstone are the only part time side in the National League but comfortably manage to keep their heads above water.
They pick up the top players at that level who for mostly work reasons don't want to turn pro and pick up talented youngsters on loan from championship and PL clubs.

The teams in the National league apart from the top two this year are mostly just full of big lumps who cancel each other out and the entertainment value is poor (although there are a few clubs (stones included ) who do try and play out from the back.

In answer to your question goalkeeper in my opinion and to name but two Nick Pope played at Ryman prem level and Harry Istead now playing on loan at Barnsley from Luton and destined for better things was in the Wealdstone side in both National league south and National league two seasons back.

Teams in the top two divisions like to send these players on loan
to National league sides to toughen them up a bit having come through and been pampered in the academies and at under 23 level.
Midfield player Aaron Henry is one particularly to watch
outstanding on loan at Wealdstone and now in and around the Charlton first team.
In general though the gulf between NL and PL for the vast majority of outfield players is just to great although the likes of Jermaine Beckford Ian Wright and Les Ferdinand have done it in the past.
However with the academy systems the days of PL clubs picking up raw and undiscovered talent from Non league seems to have disappeared and nowadays it's mostly non league picking up ex academy and under 23 players who have been released and are trying to resurect their careers.

Seen quite a bit of none-league recently and have been surprised that a lot of teams try and play it out from the back instead of the keeper always launching it. The biggest gap would be the ability to take chances. Having said that I watched Gateshead play a few times and they had a forward called Macaulay Langstaff who I thought was quite decent but not prolific but he transferred to Notts County and has banged in 45 from 42, the Haaland of the lower leagues!

Saw an interview once, can’t remember who, and he said with the exception of the absolute top stars the only real difference between premier league players and league 2 was consistency. They can all play well just some play well 9 out of ten matches while others are 3 or 4 out of ten. Makes sense to me.

I'd say a creative midfielder, like Devo.

Watch a fair bit of non-league football and think the smallest gap would be centre forwards. Very clinical finishers some of them, but then again they could be well off the pace a few divisions up?

It’s good to see teams trying to play football at the lower levels, instead of the hoof ball that you used to get.

I don’t think there is a massive difference in the skill levels, but there is a big gulf in the pace of the game and fitness levels.

West Ham are always the exception.

Roberto must've been worse than most National League keepers

definitely CF, Mullin elevated Wrexham this year with his consistency
